At Barn2Door we are fortunate to be able to support farmers who are passionate about growing clean, sustainable food. We love to gush about them. We want them to thrive. They work hard on the farm and we work hard to bring awareness that they exist and have glorious food to sell.
Fairview Orchards is a family owned and operated farm that cultivates a diverse variety of certified organic fruit such as Hass Avocados, Meyer Lemons, Blood Oranges, Figs, Specialty Tangerines, Jujubes & Pomegranates.
We are glad to have some of Sean's farm food - right now avocados and lemons - on Barn2Door. We thought you’d like to learn a bit about him, so we asked him for a Q&A style interview:
Q: Have you always been a farmer?
A: I am relatively new to farming with only around 2 years of commercial farming experience. Before I was a farmer, I dreamed of becoming a farmer.
Q: When and why did you start your farm?
A: We started the farm in the spring of 2013. We were traveling through Ojai (CA) on a weekend day trip and fell in love with an organic farm that had been certified organic for a number of years, but was somewhat neglected and the owner was selling. We jumped at the opportunity, and packed our bags for Ojai with the commitment of bringing the farm back to its fullest potential.
Q: How’d you choose the name?
A: Simple. Our farm is located on Fairview Road and it’s mostly an orchard [so Fairview Orchards made sense]. We also wanted something recognizable to the community.
Q: What differentiates your farm from other farms?
A: At Fairview Orchards.... we hand-pick and deliver or ship fresh within 24 hours of harvesting; we practice both traditional and sustainable farming methods while utilizing the latest technologies. Our farm is 100% powered by solar energy and is nestled in Ojai, California, surrounded by rolling hills and the majestic Topa Topa mountains. We are fortunate to have naturally rich soil and a wonderful micro-climate that our trees and plants love.
Q: Do you have one thing you grow / raise that you are know for? A specialty?
A: We are known for our Meyer Lemons and Hass Avocados.
Q: What is your favorite way to eat or prepare that item?
A: My wife makes Meyer Limoncello. Organic Meyer Lemons are perfect for this since you use the rinds [to make limoncello] and want to use organic untreated lemons. Our fruit is not waxed, not sprayed and is never stored longer than 24 hours.
Q: What is your favorite thing to do on the farm?
A: Walking through the orchard to make sure everything is happy.
Q: What 2-3 things do you love most about farming?
1) Being able to learn and preserve sustainable farming methods and land stewardship
2) Working with nature
3) Sharing the fruit we grow with everyone
Q: What are the 2-3 biggest challenges of farming?
1) Sustainable irrigation, especially here in California.
2) Selling all of our fruit for a price that covers the cost of growing it organically.
